This summer,a group of my friends and I decided to go on a backpacking trip up to Grassy Mountain Lakes- BUT because of the immense wildfires- that specific trail was closed. Not about to give up on our adventurous plans, we decided to either hike in and possibly get a serious fine or backtrack to Granite Twin Lakes. Out of pure maturity, we decided on the latter- which turned out to be an awesome choice. The trail up to the lakes proved to be quite the thigh-burner, but a nice challenge with gorgeous views. We camped out at the lake 2 nights, also making a trek to Granite Mountain to do some bouldering. The trail to Granite is about .5 miles away from the alpine lakes, and in bad condition so much of the hike was “off-trail.” The nights were cold- which felt great after a long day! Beautiful scenery, and the smoke had diminished enough to even see the milky way. Totally worth it!
