On beautiful fall days, I feel it should be mandatory to get outside and enjoy the fall breeze while it lasts! Today, I did just that in the beautiful Birds of Prey recreation area near Kuna, Idaho. My goal was to reach a specidic trailhead with Native American artifacts along it, but the directions I had read must of been outdated. (Hopefully I’ll figure it out and be able to fill y’all in before the cool wheaten comes!) Although disappointed, I quickly found a different trail head along the snake river- MUCH more of an elevation gain- that I tried out. If you walk along the river (in the opposite direction of the Swan Falls Dam) you’ll eventually hit a dead end dirt road that leads to the trailhead. The trail may look daunting at first, but I promise it’s worth the climb. Bella, my dog, and I conquered 1/4 of the trail system today and came across some beautiful views. River Canyon Trail is not well maintained at all, but if you stick to your gut and are willing to climb over a few boulders, it is possible to follow what some may call a “trail.” (Be very sure to wear supportive hiking boots on this one guys!) Along the steep mountain, there is a whole bunch of lava rock, and a multitude of dried up sage. If you look south while trekking, you’ll see the snake river canyon from a great angle. Since I did not have the time to complete the entire trail system, I’m not sure about the total incline but the first 3 miles conquer 400 feet of elevation gain. As a whole, it was a great workout, I saw some beautiful sights, and I’m excited to continue exploring this specific area not many Idahoans know about!
