Every time I head up to the mountains, I have tons of hikes in mind but usually only get around to doing one. Thankfully, this weekend proved to skew from the norm! I fit in two separate hikes and three alpine lakes. Plus, it was in the high 80’s resulting in some nice tan lines (yes, Auntie Krista I wore sunscreen haha) and swimming in the alpine lakes (AKA melted ice)!
Upper Hazard Lake was the first adventure and took the greater part of the day. As some of you may know, this is my favorite alpine lake so far. Not only is the hike abundant in wildflowers, but the water is bright blue and reflects the snowcapped granite when still. The hike itself is easy, only 4.5 miles roundtrip and with a light elevation gain (mainly on the way there).
Directions:
From Boise: Drive North on Hwy 55 toward McCall, Go through the town of McCall, Turn right at Brundage/ Goose Lake Rd, Travel 22 miles (mostly gravel), Turn Right at Hazard Lake Campground. The trailhead is clearly marked with alternate routes, but all headed to the main trail.
Day 2 Blue Lake Cascade, ID

Opting for something a little shorter due to the increase in temperature, we headed out to Blue Lake. Simple as it sounds, it proved to be a beautiful hike with gorgeous landscapes! The hike itself was only 2.3 miles roundtrip but fairly steep on the way back up the mountain. If you explore off to the SE about .3 miles the Idaho Batholiths can be seen clearly from the peak above the lake. The water of Blue Lake was surprisingly warm, with not one mosquito to be seen! Definitely a place I want to explore more and an awesome short hike for all a
ges.
Directions:
From Boise: Drive North Hwy 55 toward Cascade, veering off to the left right before the town at Cabarton Rd. Stay on the main road for about 8 miles and then take a left on NFD 435. In 4.4 miles the trailhead parking lot is on your left.
Hope everybody is having a great summer and staying healthy. Remember, you weren’t just born to pay bills and die! Get out there and explore this beautiful earth.
